Mixing and Mastering ‘Utterance’

Well, I’ve finished recording and arranging all the parts to the song, it took some time, but now it’s time for mixing. I used my trusted mixing engineer Dominique James who has mixed my previous two singles ‘O My Friend in Word‘ and ‘Cleanse‘.

I decided not to go too crazy with backing vocal harmonies on this track and kept things a bit simpler. The production was carefully thought out and selecting vocal takes was challenging, but worth taking my time over. That’s the thing about doing everything myself, it’s up to me to think about every little detail in all aspects to do with the music.

Dom and I worked well on this track, a lot of communication was involved. I let Dom do his thing so that he could use his magical mixing skills and creativity to add to the mix. I then played a rough mix that I had done before I went to Dom’s studio, so Dom could get an idea of the way I wanted it to sound. He made tweaks and adjustments that blended both our ideas together. We used more panning in this song, a lot of instruments were getting lost in the mix to begin with and I thought it would be good to spread them out a bit so that they could stand out a bit more. I think it helped. A few issues cropped up as we tried to get the bass guitar sounding right, but Dom managed to EQ that well (some clicking noises needed fixing).

It took us just under two weeks to be happy with the mix before I sent it off to Sam Proctor at Lismore Mastering to master the track. Sam was the mastering engineer for my single ‘Cleanse‘.

Anyway, we got there in the end, and I hope everyone who listens to it enjoys it. On to the next one!
